Over 100 people filled the Florin Creek Recreation Center on the evening of Tuesday, November 10th 2009, for the first Sacramento Hmong Voices Premiere. During the summer of 2009, teens from Hiram Johnson and Luther Burbank High Schools produced films which tell the history of the secret war in Laos, the refugee camps in Thailand, immigration to California's Central Valley and integration into American life.
The premiere was made possible by Sacramento City Unified School District, Sacramento Region Community Foundation and the Center for Multicultural Cooperation.
Hmong Voices is part of the California Voices initiative designed to mobilize young people to have a greater voice in the digital era while preserving the legacy of elders who have made significant contributions to culture, community, and country.
Latino Voices will premiere films produced this summer on Wednesday, November 18 beginning at 6 in the evening at Azukar Lounge. Featured storytellers will include Norma Barajas, Jim Franco René Aguilera and Norma Andrade. Cultural dance performances will also be part of the program.
The Native Voices Film Premiere will be the featured entertainment at the SNAHC Community Winter Banquet on Saturday, December 12 at 4 PM. Students created films about issues that personally related to them. Attendees to the banquet will also enjoy dinner, raffles and games. |
