The Center for Multicultural Cooperation

Native Voices is an initiative of the Center for Multicultural Cooperation designed to train young people using new methods for cultural documentation, to preserve Native beliefs, language, and values, and to share the perspectives and contributions of local Native elders.

During Summer 2009, students from Sacramento area schools produced mini-documentaries about issues that affect them as American Indian students, including the high school drop out rate, being of mixed heritage, and gangs. These projects help to mobilize young people to become civically engaged, use technology to serve their community, and envision a brighter future for themselves and their families.

Because the students represented over 10 Federally Recognized Tribes, the Center for Multicultural Cooperation partnered with the Native TANF program to ensure that students were engaged in cultural activities as well as video making.  Students were able to attend powwows and festivals, watch Native movies and documentaries, learn how to bead, and volunteer with other Native organizations in the Sacramento area.

At the conclusion of the summer, seven of the top leaders from Native Voices were invited to attend the UC Santa Cruz Technology Leadership Institute.  This week-long institute engaged students in the university experience by sleeping in the dorms, eating in the dining hall, and interacting with University staff and students.  They were also given a detailed understanding of the process of applying for college and funding their education through sessions with U.C. representatives from the Admissions and Financial Aid Offices.

On December 12th, 2009 the films created during the Native Voices program were premiered to the community at the Sacramento Native American Health Center’s Community Winter Banquet.

Planning for Native Voices 2010 is well underway!  Applications will be ready soon, so make sure you check back often!
